Norelgestromin

Norelgestromin is a progestin medication which is used in hormonal contraception in combination with ethinylestradiol under the brand name Ortho Evra and Xulane. It is a prodrug of norgestimate, which, in the body, is transformed into levonorgestrel, a highly potent progestogen.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

Norelgestromin is used for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use a transdermal patch as a method of contraception. Norelgestromin is used in combination with ethinylestradiol.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

As a progestin, norelgestromin has anti-estrogen effects. It works by inhibiting the release of an egg during the menstrual cycle.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of norelgestromin include nausea, breast tenderness, headache, fatigue, mood changes, and abdominal pain. Serious side effects may include blood clots, heart attack, and stroke.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Norelgestromin may interact with other drugs such as rifampin, ritonavir, St. John's wort, and seizure medications.
