Normethadone
Normethadone is a synthetic opioid analgesic similar to methadone. It is used in the treatment of severe pain and opioid addiction.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Normethadone is a full agonist at the mu-opioid receptor and has a high affinity for the delta-opioid receptor. It also has NMDA antagonist properties which may help to prevent opioid tolerance.
Medical uses[edit | edit source]
Normethadone is used in the treatment of severe pain and in the maintenance treatment of opioid addiction. It is also used in the treatment of opioid withdrawal symptoms.
Side effects[edit | edit source]
The most common side effects of normethadone are similar to those of other opioids and include constipation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and sedation.
Contraindications[edit | edit source]
Normethadone is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to normethadone or any of its components. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe respiratory depression, acute or severe bronchial asthma, or hypercarbia.
Interactions[edit | edit source]
Normethadone can interact with other medications, including other opioids, benzodiazepines, and certain types of antidepressants.
