The North Island is one of the two main islands of New Zealand, separated from the slightly larger but less populous South Island by Cook Strait. The island's area is 113,729 square kilometres (43,911 sq mi), making it the world's 14th-largest island. It has a population of 3,749,200 as of June 2020.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The North Island is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the east and the Tasman Sea on the west. The island's most northern point is Cape Reinga and its most southern point is Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand.

Health and Medicine[edit | edit source]

Healthcare in the North Island is primarily provided by 12 District Health Boards (DHBs). These DHBs plan, fund and provide healthcare services to their respective districts. The North Island is also home to several major hospitals, including Auckland City Hospital, Wellington Hospital and Waikato Hospital.

Flora and Fauna[edit | edit source]

The North Island is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Notable species include the kiwi, a flightless bird which is a national symbol of New Zealand, and the kauri tree, one of the world's largest types of tree.
