Niue is a small island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean, part of the continent of Oceania. It is a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand. Despite its small size and population, Niue has a significant global ranking in terms of adult obesity.
Obesity in Niue[edit | edit source]
In 2016, Niue had an adult obesity rate of 50%, ranking it 6th globally. This high rate of obesity is a major public health concern for the island nation. Obesity is associated with a number of serious health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
Niue's government has implemented various strategies to combat obesity, including promoting physical activity and healthy eating. However, the high obesity rate suggests that these efforts have not been entirely successful.
Healthcare in Niue[edit | edit source]
Healthcare services in Niue are provided by the Niue Foou Hospital, located in the capital city of Alofi. The hospital provides a range of services, including general medical care, surgical procedures, and emergency services.
In response to the high obesity rate, the hospital has also implemented a weight loss program. This program includes dietary counseling, physical activity guidance, and regular health check-ups.
Despite these efforts, the high obesity rate in Niue remains a significant challenge. Further research and intervention strategies are needed to address this public health issue.
