Ottawa Hospital Research Institute

Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital and an affiliated institute of the University of Ottawa. It is one of the largest hospital-based research institutes in Canada, with a focus on understanding and developing innovative approaches to health care.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute was established in 2001, following the merger of three separate research facilities. The institute's roots can be traced back to the 1950s, when the first research laboratories were established at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute conducts research in a wide range of areas, including cancer, heart disease, neuroscience, regenerative medicine, infectious disease, and epidemiology. The institute is organized into three research programs: Cancer Therapeutics, Chronic Disease, and Regenerative Medicine.

The Cancer Therapeutics program focuses on developing new treatments for various types of cancer. This includes research into chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy.

Chronic Disease[edit | edit source]

The Chronic Disease program conducts research into diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory disease. The goal of this program is to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these diseases.

Regenerative Medicine[edit | edit source]

The Regenerative Medicine program focuses on developing new therapies that can repair or replace damaged tissues and organs. This includes research into stem cells, gene therapy, and tissue engineering.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute is located in the Ottawa Health Sciences Centre, which also houses The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Medicine. The institute's facilities include state-of-the-art laboratories, clinical research units, and a biobank.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute collaborates with a number of local, national, and international partners. These include the University of Ottawa, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research.
