Otto Buchinger
German physician and pioneer of therapeutic fasting
Otto Buchinger[edit | edit source]
Otto Buchinger (16 February 1878 – 16 April 1966) was a German physician known for his pioneering work in the field of therapeutic fasting. He developed the "Buchinger method" of fasting, which has been influential in the field of alternative medicine.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Otto Buchinger was born in Darmstadt, Germany. He pursued a career in medicine, studying at various universities in Germany. His early medical career was interrupted by his service in the German Army during World War I.
Development of Therapeutic Fasting[edit | edit source]
After suffering from rheumatism and finding no relief from conventional treatments, Buchinger began experimenting with fasting as a form of therapy. He discovered that fasting not only alleviated his symptoms but also improved his overall health. This personal experience led him to develop a structured fasting regimen, which he later termed the "Buchinger method."
The Buchinger Method[edit | edit source]
The Buchinger method involves a period of fasting where the individual consumes only liquids such as vegetable broth, herbal tea, and fruit juice. This method is designed to detoxify the body and promote healing. Buchinger believed that fasting could treat a variety of ailments, including digestive disorders, metabolic diseases, and chronic pain.
Establishment of Fasting Clinics[edit | edit source]
In 1920, Buchinger founded his first fasting clinic in Wiesbaden, Germany. The clinic offered patients a structured environment to undergo therapeutic fasting under medical supervision. The success of this clinic led to the establishment of additional clinics, including the well-known Buchinger Wilhelmi Clinic on Lake Constance.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Otto Buchinger's work laid the foundation for modern therapeutic fasting practices. His methods continue to be used in clinics around the world, and his approach has influenced the development of various detoxification and wellness programs. Buchinger's emphasis on the holistic treatment of the body and mind has also contributed to the broader field of integrative medicine.
