Patriot Day is an annual observance in the United States held on September 11 to commemorate the lives lost during the September 11 attacks in 2001. This day is not a federal public holiday, but it is a day of remembrance and reflection for many Americans.

History[edit | edit source]

The September 11 attacks were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,977 victims, making it the deadliest terrorist act in world history.

In the aftermath of the attacks, there was a strong desire to honor the victims and heroes of that day. On December 18, 2001, the United States Congress passed a joint resolution designating September 11 as Patriot Day. President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001.

Observance[edit | edit source]

On Patriot Day, the President of the United States issues a proclamation asking Americans to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM Eastern Daylight Time, the time when the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Americans are also encouraged to display the flag of the United States at half-staff from their homes, the White House, and all U.S. government buildings and establishments, both within the country and abroad.

Many communities and organizations hold memorial ceremonies, prayer services, and other events to honor the victims and first responders who lost their lives.

Significance[edit | edit source]

Patriot Day serves as a reminder of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the impact they had on the United States and the world. It is a day to reflect on the resilience and unity of the American people in the face of adversity.
