Pemirolast
Pemirolast is a mast cell stabilizer used in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis and asthma. It is marketed under the trade names Alegysal and Alamast.
Pharmacology[edit]
Pemirolast functions as a mast cell stabilizer, inhibiting the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators from mast cells. It does this by blocking the calcium channel essential for mast cell degranulation, preventing the release of these inflammatory mediators and thereby reducing the symptoms of allergic reactions.
Clinical Use[edit]
Pemirolast is used in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis, a type of eye inflammation caused by allergies. It is also used in the management of asthma, particularly in cases where the condition is triggered by allergens.
Side Effects[edit]
Common side effects of Pemirolast include eye irritation, headache, and a bitter taste in the mouth. Rare but serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions.
Interactions[edit]
Pemirolast may interact with other drugs, particularly those that also affect the immune system. It is important to inform healthcare providers of all medications being taken to avoid potential interactions.
