Physical Activity is a term that encompasses any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. It includes activities undertaken while working, playing, carrying out household chores, travelling, and engaging in recreational pursuits. The level of physical activity varies considerably across the population, with some individuals being highly active and others leading largely sedentary lifestyles.

Physical activity is fundamental to energy balance and weight control. It is also beneficial for the health of various body systems, and is associated with a reduced risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Types of Physical Activity[edit | edit source]

Physical activity can be categorized into different types based on the intensity and duration of the activity. These include:

  • Aerobic Activity: This type of activity, also known as cardio, involves the large muscles in the body and increases heart rate and breathing. Examples include brisk walking, running, and swimming.
  • Muscle-Strengthening Activity: This type of activity, also known as resistance training or weight training, strengthens the muscles by making them work harder than they're used to. Examples include lifting weights and doing push-ups and sit-ups.
  • Bone-Strengthening Activity: This type of activity, also known as weight-bearing or weight-loading activity, promotes bone growth and strength. Examples include jumping rope, playing basketball, and lifting weights.
  • Balance and Flexibility Activity: This type of activity enhances physical stability and ability to move joints through the full range of motion. Examples include stretching, dancing, yoga, martial arts, and Pilates.

Regular physical activity has numerous health benefits, including:

  • Heart Health: Physical activity can help prevent heart disease and stroke by strengthening the heart muscle, lowering blood pressure, increasing the capacity of the blood vessels to carry oxygen, and reducing the risk of developing harmful blood clots.
  • Bone Health: Weight-bearing physical activity like walking and running, and resistance exercises can slow the bone loss associated with aging, and can help prevent osteoporosis.
  • Mental Health: Physical activity has been shown to reduce symptoms in people who are suffering from depression and anxiety. It also helps with stress management.
  • Weight Management: Regular physical activity can help maintain a healthy weight, and can assist with weight loss when combined with a reduced-calorie diet.
