Post-behavioralism
Post-behavioralism is a political science theory that emerged in the late 20th century, challenging the dominant behavioralism approach. It advocates for a more balanced methodology that incorporates both empirical and normative aspects of political analysis.
History[edit | edit source]
Post-behavioralism was first proposed by David Easton in his presidential address to the American Political Science Association in 1969. Easton criticized the behavioralist approach for its overemphasis on empirical data and its neglect of the normative aspects of political life. He argued that political science should not only describe and explain political behavior, but also evaluate it and provide guidance for political action.
Principles[edit | edit source]
Post-behavioralism is based on several key principles:
- Relevance: Post-behavioralists argue that political science should be relevant to real-world political problems. This contrasts with the behavioralist focus on pure scientific inquiry.
- Values: Unlike behavioralists, who strive for value-free research, post-behavioralists believe that values are an integral part of political life and should be incorporated into political analysis.
- Integration: Post-behavioralism seeks to integrate empirical and normative approaches, combining the strengths of both to provide a more comprehensive understanding of political phenomena.
Criticisms[edit | edit source]
Despite its contributions, post-behavioralism has been criticized on several fronts. Some argue that its emphasis on relevance and values compromises the objectivity of political science. Others contend that the integration of empirical and normative approaches is difficult to achieve in practice.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Post-behavioralism has had a significant impact on political science, prompting a shift towards more policy-oriented research and a greater recognition of the role of values in political analysis. It has also influenced the development of other theories, such as postmodernism and critical theory.
