R. Jude Samulski
R. Jude Samulski is an American geneticist and virologist known for his pioneering work in the field of gene therapy. He is particularly recognized for his research on the adeno-associated virus (AAV), which has been instrumental in the development of gene therapies for various genetic disorders.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Samulski was born and raised in the United States. He completed his undergraduate studies in biology and went on to earn his Ph.D. in molecular biology and genetics. His doctoral research focused on the biology of AAV, laying the groundwork for his future contributions to gene therapy.
Career and Research[edit | edit source]
Following his Ph.D., Samulski continued his research on AAV at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). His work led to the development of AAV vectors, which are now widely used in gene therapy to deliver therapeutic genes to patients' cells.
In 2001, Samulski co-founded Asklepios BioPharmaceutical (AskBio), a biotech company focused on developing gene therapies for genetic disorders. As the company's Director of the Gene Therapy Center, he has overseen the development of several groundbreaking therapies, including a treatment for spinal muscular atrophy that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019.
Samulski's research has also contributed to our understanding of the immune response to AAV vectors, which is crucial for the safety and efficacy of gene therapies. His work in this area has led to the development of strategies to overcome immune barriers to gene therapy.
Honors and Awards[edit | edit source]
Samulski's contributions to gene therapy have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. He is a member of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy and has received the society's Outstanding Achievement Award.
