Reno

Reno is the largest city in the U.S. state of Nevada, outside of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Known as "The Biggest Little City in the World", Reno is famous for its casinos and as the birthplace of Caesars Entertainment Corporation.

Reno was established in 1868 as a stop along the First Transcontinental Railroad. The city was named after Jesse L. Reno, a Union general during the American Civil War. In the 20th century, Reno became known for its gambling industry.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Reno is located in the northwestern part of Nevada, approximately 22 miles from Lake Tahoe. The city lies in a high desert valley at the foot of the Sierra Nevada.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Reno's economy was historically based on gaming and entertainment. However, the city has diversified in recent years with the growth of distribution, technology, and healthcare sectors. Companies such as Tesla and Amazon have large operations in the area.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Reno is home to a variety of cultural events and institutions. These include the National Automobile Museum, the Nevada Museum of Art, and the annual Burning Man festival.

Education[edit | edit source]

The city is served by the Washoe County School District. Higher education institutions in Reno include the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Reno is served by Reno-Tahoe International Airport, the second busiest airport in Nevada. The city also has a public transportation system operated by the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County.
