Richard Goldbloom
Richard Goldbloom (1924–2021) was a prominent Canadian pediatrician and academic. He was widely recognized for his contributions to pediatrics and medical education in Canada.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Richard Goldbloom was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1924. He completed his undergraduate studies at McGill University and went on to earn his medical degree from the same institution in 1949. Following his graduation, Goldbloom pursued further training in pediatrics at the Montreal Children's Hospital and the Boston Children's Hospital.
Career[edit | edit source]
Goldbloom began his career as a pediatrician in Montreal before moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1967. He was appointed as the first Director of the Izaak Walton Killam Health Centre for Children, now known as the IWK Health Centre. Under his leadership, the IWK Health Centre became a leading institution for pediatric care and research in Canada.
In addition to his clinical work, Goldbloom was a dedicated educator. He served as a professor of pediatrics at Dalhousie University and was instrumental in developing the university's medical curriculum. He authored numerous articles and textbooks on pediatric care, which have been widely used in medical education.
Contributions to Pediatrics[edit | edit source]
Goldbloom's contributions to pediatrics were numerous. He was a pioneer in the field of community pediatrics, emphasizing the importance of preventive care and the role of the community in supporting children's health. Richard Goldbloom was married to Ruth Goldbloom, a well-known community volunteer and philanthropist. They had three children together. Goldbloom passed away in 2021 at the age of 96.
