Roscoe Gardner Bartlett (born June 3, 1926) is an American politician and scientist who served as the U.S. Representative for Maryland's 6th congressional district from 1993 to 2013. He is a member of the Republican Party.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Bartlett was born in Moreland, Kentucky. He attended Columbia Union College (now Washington Adventist University), where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in theology. He later attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he earned a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in physiology.

Academic and scientific career[edit | edit source]

Before entering politics, Bartlett had a distinguished career as a scientist and engineer. He worked as a professor at the University of Maryland, College Park and later at Loma Linda University. He also worked as a research scientist and engineer at various institutions, including the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Bartlett was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1992, representing Maryland's 6th congressional district. During his tenure, he was known for his work on issues related to energy policy, national security, and environmental conservation. He was a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.

Bartlett was a strong advocate for renewable energy and energy independence. He was also known for his interest in peak oil and sustainability issues. He served ten terms in Congress before being defeated in the 2012 election by John Delaney.

Bartlett is married to Ellen L. Bartlett, and they have ten children. He is a devout Seventh-day Adventist and has been involved in various community and religious activities.
