From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Rossendale General Hospital was a health facility located in Rossendale, Lancashire, England. It was managed by the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust until its closure in 2010.

History[edit | edit source]

The hospital was established in the early 20th century as a workhouse for the poor. It was later converted into a hospital during the Second World War to cater to the medical needs of the local population and the war wounded.

In the post-war period, the hospital expanded its services to include a maternity ward, geriatric care, and mental health services. It was incorporated into the National Health Service (NHS) in 1948.

Services[edit | edit source]

Rossendale General Hospital provided a wide range of medical services. These included emergency medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, and psychiatry. The hospital also had a radiology department and a pathology lab.

Closure[edit | edit source]

The hospital was closed in 2010 following a decision by the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The closure was part of a wider plan to centralize healthcare services in the region. The hospital's services were transferred to other facilities within the Trust.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite its closure, Rossendale General Hospital remains a significant part of the history of healthcare in Lancashire. It is remembered for its contributions to the community, particularly during the Second World War and the early years of the NHS.
