Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), also known as the Mounties, is the federal and national police force of Canada. The RCMP provides law enforcement at the federal level and also offers provincial and municipal policing services under contracts to the three territories, eight provinces (all except Ontario and Quebec), more than 150 municipalities, and more than 600 Indigenous communities.

History

The RCMP was founded in 1873 as the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) to bring law and order to the then-newly acquired western territories. The force's name was changed to the Royal Northwest Mounted Police (RNWMP) in 1904, and it merged with the Dominion Police to become the current Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1920. This merger expanded the force's jurisdiction from rural areas to include federal law enforcement across the entire country.

Organization

The RCMP is headed by a Commissioner and is divided into divisions based on geographical areas. Each division is designated by a letter and has a headquarters. The force's national headquarters is located in Ottawa, Ontario. The RCMP employs over 30,000 people, including sworn officers, civilian members, and public service employees.

Duties and Responsibilities

The RCMP's duties include enforcing federal laws related to terrorism, organized crime, drugs, counterfeiting, and immigration. It also provides provincial policing in areas without a local police force and municipal policing to communities under contract. The RCMP is responsible for VIP security, including the protection of the Prime Minister of Canada and the Governor General of Canada, and offers international policing services through peacekeeping and advisory roles.

Training

All RCMP officers undergo training at the RCMP Academy, Depot Division, located in Regina, Saskatchewan. The training program combines classroom studies with practical, hands-on experience and emphasizes the importance of physical fitness, police tactics, and ethical behavior.
