Ruhakana Rugunda (born 7 November 1947) is a Ugandan physician and politician who served as the 10th Prime Minister of Uganda from 2014 to 2021. He has held various cabinet positions in the Government of Uganda and has been a prominent member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Rugunda was born in Kabale District, Uganda. He attended Kigezi College Butobere for his secondary education before joining Makerere University, where he studied medicine. He later pursued further studies in public health at the University of California, Berkeley.
Political career[edit | edit source]
Rugunda's political career began in the early 1980s when he became involved with the National Resistance Movement. He has held several key positions in the Ugandan government, including:
- Minister of Health (1986–1988, 2013–2014)
- Minister of Foreign Affairs (1994–1996)
- Minister of Internal Affairs (2003–2009)
- Minister of Information and Communication Technology (2011–2013)
In 2014, Rugunda was appointed as the Prime Minister of Uganda, a position he held until 2021. During his tenure, he was involved in various national and international initiatives, including efforts to improve healthcare and education in Uganda.

Rugunda is married to Jocelyn Rugunda, and they have four children. He is known for his dedication to public service and his contributions to the development of Uganda's healthcare system.
