Ryan Thomas Gosling (born November 12, 1980) is a Canadian actor and musician. He is known for his work in both independent films and major studio blockbusters. Gosling has received various accolades, including a Golden Globe Award, and has been nominated for two Academy Awards and a British Academy Film Award.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Ryan Gosling was born in London, Ontario, and raised in Cornwall, Ontario. He is the son of Thomas Ray Gosling, a traveling salesman for a paper mill, and Donna, a secretary. Gosling's parents are of French Canadian, English, Scottish, and Irish descent. He was raised in a Mormon household.

Early work[edit | edit source]

Gosling began his career as a child star on the Disney Channel's The Mickey Mouse Club (1993–1995) and went on to appear in other family entertainment programs, including Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1995) and Goosebumps (1996).

Breakthrough and critical success[edit | edit source]

Gosling gained wider recognition in 2004 with a leading role in the romantic drama The Notebook. His performance in the film earned him a MTV Movie Award and four Teen Choice Awards.

In 2006, Gosling starred in the drama Half Nelson, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. He continued to receive critical acclaim for his roles in Lars and the Real Girl (2007) and Blue Valentine (2010).

Mainstream success[edit | edit source]

Gosling achieved mainstream success with roles in Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011), Drive (2011), and The Ides of March (2011). He received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his performance in La La Land (2016), and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for the same role.

Recent work[edit | edit source]

In recent years, Gosling has starred in films such as Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and First Man (2018), where he portrayed astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Gosling has been in a relationship with actress Eva Mendes since 2011. The couple has two daughters. In addition to his acting career, Gosling is a musician and is part of the band Dead Man's Bones.
