Cancer Biologist Scott Lowe

Scott W. Lowe is an American cancer biologist known for his contributions to the understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying cancer. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Education[edit | edit source]

Lowe received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He then pursued his Ph.D. in Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he worked under the supervision of Tyler Jacks.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his Ph.D., Lowe joined the faculty at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), where he made significant contributions to the field of cancer biology. His research at CSHL focused on the role of tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes in cancer development and progression.

In 2011, Lowe moved to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), where he currently serves as the Chair of the Cancer Biology and Genetics Program. At MSKCC, his research continues to explore the genetic and molecular mechanisms that drive cancer, with a particular focus on apoptosis, senescence, and tumor microenvironment.

Research[edit | edit source]

Lowe's research has significantly advanced the understanding of how genetic alterations contribute to cancer. His work on the p53 tumor suppressor gene has been particularly influential. Lowe demonstrated that p53 plays a critical role in inducing apoptosis in response to cellular stress, thereby preventing the development of cancer.

He has also investigated the mechanisms of chemotherapy resistance and the role of epigenetics in cancer. His research has led to the identification of potential therapeutic targets and strategies for overcoming drug resistance in cancer treatment.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Lowe has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to cancer research, including:

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Lowe resides in New York City with his family. He is actively involved in mentoring the next generation of cancer researchers and is a frequent speaker at scientific conferences and symposia.
