Selena Marie Gomez (born July 22, 1992) is an American singer, actress, and producer. Born and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas, Gomez began her acting career on the children's television series Barney & Friends (2002–2004). She rose to prominence for her role as Alex Russo in the Disney Channel television series Wizards of Waverly Place (2007–2012).

Selena Gomez was born on July 22, 1992, in Grand Prairie, Texas, to Ricardo Joel Gomez and former stage actress Amanda Dawn "Mandy" Cornett. Gomez's parents divorced when she was five years old, and she remained with her mother. She has two younger half-sisters: Gracie Elliot Teefey and Victoria "Tori" Gomez.

Acting[edit | edit source]

Gomez began her acting career at age seven, playing Gianna on Barney & Friends. She later had minor roles in films such as Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003) and Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire (2005). In 2007, Gomez was cast as Alex Russo in the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place, which became a critical and commercial success.

Music[edit | edit source]

In addition to her acting career, Gomez pursued a career in music. She formed the band Selena Gomez & the Scene in 2009, which released three studio albums: Kiss & Tell (2009), A Year Without Rain (2010), and When the Sun Goes Down (2011). The band disbanded in 2012, and Gomez embarked on a solo career, releasing her debut solo album, Stars Dance (2013). She has since released several successful albums, including Revival (2015) and Rare (2020).

Gomez has also ventured into production, serving as an executive producer for the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why (2017–2020) and Living Undocumented (2019).

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Gomez has been open about her struggles with anxiety and depression. In 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant due to complications from lupus, with her friend Francia Raisa serving as the donor.

Philanthropy[edit | edit source]

Gomez is known for her philanthropic work. She has been involved with various charitable organizations, including UNICEF, for which she was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2009.
