Sergliflozin is a pharmaceutical compound that belongs to the class of drugs known as SGLT2 inhibitors. These drugs are primarily used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus by promoting the excretion of glucose through the urine, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Sergliflozin works by inhibiting the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) in the proximal tubules of the kidney. SGLT2 is responsible for the reabsorption of glucose from the glomerular filtrate back into the bloodstream. By inhibiting this transporter, sergliflozin reduces glucose reabsorption, leading to increased urinary glucose excretion and a reduction in blood glucose levels.

Pharmacokinetics[edit | edit source]

Sergliflozin is administered orally and is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. It undergoes hepatic metabolism and is excreted primarily via the urine. The pharmacokinetic profile of sergliflozin includes a half-life that supports once-daily dosing, making it convenient for patients.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

Sergliflozin is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in patients who require additional glycemic control beyond what is achieved with diet, exercise, and other antidiabetic medications. It is often used in combination with other antidiabetic agents such as metformin or sulfonylureas.

Adverse Effects[edit | edit source]

Common adverse effects of sergliflozin include urinary tract infections, increased urination, and genital mycotic infections. These are related to the increased glucose concentration in the urine. Rare but serious side effects include ketoacidosis and acute kidney injury.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Sergliflozin is contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or those on dialysis. It should also be used with caution in patients with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections or genital infections.

Research and Development[edit | edit source]

Sergliflozin is part of ongoing research to explore its potential benefits beyond glucose control, such as cardiovascular protection and weight loss. Studies are also investigating its effects on renal outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease.
