Serzone
Serzone is a brand name for the drug Nefazodone, an antidepressant used to treat clinical depression and anxiety disorders. It is known for its unique action in the brain and its lower risk of certain side effects compared to other antidepressants.
History[edit | edit source]
Serzone was developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and approved by the FDA in 1994. However, it was discontinued in the United States in 2004 due to concerns about liver toxicity. Despite this, generic versions of nefazodone are still available.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Nefazodone acts as an antagonist at several serotonin receptors, which is thought to contribute to its antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. It also inhibits the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, further enhancing the availability of these neurotransmitters in the brain.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of Serzone include dizziness, nausea, and dry mouth. However, it is less likely to cause sexual side effects or weight gain compared to other antidepressants. The most serious potential side effect is liver toxicity, which can lead to liver failure in rare cases.
