Social phobia

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Social phobia, also known as social anxiety disorder, is a type of anxiety disorder characterized by excessive fear, discomfort, and avoidance of social situations due to fear of being watched, judged, or embarrassed.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of social phobia can be physical, emotional, and behavioral. Physical symptoms can include blushing, sweating, trembling, nausea, and rapid heartbeat. Emotional symptoms can include intense worry, fear of embarrassment, and fear of interaction. Behavioral symptoms can include avoidance of social situations, staying away from places where there are other people, and fear of speaking in public.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of social phobia is unknown. However, it is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Some people may be genetically predisposed to social phobia, while others may develop the disorder as a result of an environmental trigger, such as a traumatic event.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of social phobia is typically made through a clinical interview and may be confirmed with psychological testing. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) provides criteria for the diagnosis of social phobia.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for social phobia typically involves psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective form of psychotherapy for treating social phobia. Medications such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and benzodiazepines may also be used.
