Sodium dichloroisocyanurate

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) is a chemical compound used as a disinfectant, biocide, industrial deodorant, and detergent. It is a white, water-soluble solid. The compound is a disinfectant, algicide, and bactericide mainly for swimming pools and dyestuffs, and is also used as a bleaching agent in the textile industry. It is widely used in the water treatment industry to chlorinate and disinfect water. It is an efficient product because it is stable, has a long shelf life, and releases chlorine slowly, ensuring prolonged disinfection periods compared to other chlorine-releasing compounds.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate is an isocyanurate compounded with two sodium atoms and two chlorine atoms. It is often abbreviated as NaDCC. The compound releases hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a potent disinfectant, when dissolved in water.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Water Treatment[edit | edit source]

In the water treatment industry, NaDCC is used for the disinfection of drinking water. It is preferred over chlorine gas or bleach for its ease of handling, storage, and controlled release of chlorine.

Swimming Pools[edit | edit source]

NaDCC is also used in swimming pools to control bacteria and algae growth, ensuring the health and safety of swimmers.

Medical Facilities[edit | edit source]

In medical facilities, sodium dichloroisocyanurate is used for sanitization of surfaces and equipment, helping to prevent the spread of infections.

Food Industry[edit | edit source]

The compound finds applications in the food industry for sanitizing food processing equipment and storage areas.

Safety and Handling[edit | edit source]

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate should be handled with care, as it is a strong oxidizer and can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) should be worn when handling the chemical.

Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]

While NaDCC is effective in killing harmful microorganisms, its use must be carefully managed to minimize environmental impact. The compound can form chlorinated by-products that may have adverse effects on aquatic life.
