Sonia Raiziss

Sonia Raiziss (1906–1994) was an American poet, editor, and translator. She was a significant figure in the literary world, known for her contributions to poetry and her work as an editor of the literary magazine Chelsea.

Sonia Raiziss was born in Germany in 1906 and later moved to the United States. She pursued her education at the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her bachelor's degree. She furthered her studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, where she developed her skills in literature and translation.

Raiziss's career was marked by her dual roles as a poet and an editor. She published several volumes of poetry, including Through a Glass Darkly and Buckskin Pants. Her poetry often explored themes of identity, nature, and the human condition.

As an editor, Raiziss was instrumental in shaping the literary magazine Chelsea, which she co-edited with her husband, Eugene Jolas. Under her leadership, the magazine became a respected platform for contemporary poetry and prose, featuring works by both established and emerging writers.
