The Splenius Capitis Muscle is a broad, strap-like muscle located in the back of the neck. It is one of the larger muscles in the neck and plays a crucial role in head and neck movements.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The Splenius Capitis originates from the lower half of the nuchal ligament and the spinous processes of the seventh cervical and the first three thoracic vertebrae. It inserts into the mastoid process of the temporal bone and the lateral third of the superior nuchal line.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the Splenius Capitis is to rotate the head and neck. When both sides of the muscle contract together, they extend the neck and head. When one side contracts, it causes the head to rotate and bend to the same side.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

Dysfunction or injury to the Splenius Capitis can result in neck pain and limited range of motion. It can also contribute to tension headaches.
