Steven C. Beering (August 20, 1932 – April 9, 2020) was a German-American physician, educator, and university administrator. He served as the president of Purdue University from 1983 to 2000 and was previously the dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Steven C. Beering was born in Berlin, Germany, and immigrated to the United States with his family. He earned his undergraduate degree from University of Pittsburgh and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Beering began his career in medicine, specializing in internal medicine and endocrinology. He served in the United States Air Force as a medical officer and later joined the faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he eventually became the dean.

Purdue University[edit | edit source]

In 1983, Beering was appointed as the ninth president of Purdue University. During his tenure, he focused on expanding the university's research capabilities, increasing enrollment, and enhancing the campus infrastructure. Under his leadership, Purdue saw the construction of several new buildings and the establishment of numerous research centers.

Beering was known for his contributions to medical education and university administration. He played a significant role in the growth and development of Purdue University, leaving a lasting impact on the institution. Steven C. Beering was married and had three children. He passed away on April 9, 2020, at the age of 87.
