Stewart County, Tennessee is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 13,715. Its county seat is Dover. The county was created in 1803 and named for Duncan Stewart, an early settler and state legislator.

History

Stewart County was established in 1803 from a portion of Montgomery County. The county played a significant role during the American Civil War, particularly with the Battle of Fort Donelson, which took place near Dover in February 1862. The battle was a crucial Union victory and led to the capture of the fort by General Ulysses S. Grant.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 493 square miles (1,280 km²), of which 459 square miles (1,190 km²) is land and 34 square miles (88 km²) (6.9%) is water. The county is part of the Clarksville, TN-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area.
