Strawberry nevus

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Strawberry nevus (also known as Infantile Hemangioma) is a common type of birthmark that appears at birth or in the first or second week of life. It looks like a raw strawberry and can appear anywhere on the body, but most commonly on the face, scalp, back, or chest.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of strawberry nevus is unknown. However, some researchers believe that certain genes may play a role. It's also thought that hormones such as estrogen might contribute to the birthmark's growth.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

A strawberry nevus is usually a raised mark on the skin that's very red in color. It can vary in size and may grow rapidly during your child's first year. The birthmark is usually harmless, although it can cause problems if it interferes with vision or breathing.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Strawberry nevus can be diagnosed by its appearance. In some cases, a dermatologist may use a magnifying glass to observe the birthmark more closely. Rarely, a skin biopsy may be needed.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Most strawberry nevi disappear by the time a child is 10 years old. Some may leave behind pale, slightly wrinkled skin. In some cases, treatment may be needed if the strawberry nevus interferes with the child's vision or breathing. Treatment options include laser surgery, corticosteroid medications, or beta-blocker medications.
