Subungual exostosis

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Subungual Exostosis is a benign bone tumor that occurs underneath the nail. It is most commonly found on the toes, particularly the big toe. The condition is often painful and can cause deformity of the nail.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of Subungual Exostosis is unknown. However, it is believed to be related to trauma or chronic irritation to the nail bed. Some researchers suggest that it may be a reactive process to an unknown stimulus.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The most common symptom of Subungual Exostosis is pain, especially when pressure is applied to the affected area. Other symptoms may include a deformity of the nail, a hard lump under the nail, and sometimes, the nail may become loose or fall off.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of Subungual Exostosis is usually made based on the clinical presentation and radiographic findings. An X-ray of the affected area can reveal the presence of a bony growth under the nail. In some cases, a biopsy may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for Subungual Exostosis usually involves surgical removal of the bony growth. This is typically done under local anesthesia. After the surgery, the nail is usually able to grow back normally.
