Sussex

Sussex is a historic county in South East England corresponding roughly in area to the ancient Kingdom of Sussex. It is bounded to the west by Hampshire, north by Surrey, northeast by Kent, south by the English Channel, and divided for many purposes into the ceremonial counties of West Sussex and East Sussex.

History[edit | edit source]

The first inhabitants of Sussex were early hominids, including Homo heidelbergensis. The Romans invaded Sussex in 43 AD, and the county became part of the Roman Empire until the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century. The Kingdom of Sussex was founded by Ælle of Sussex in 477 AD, and the county remained a kingdom until it was annexed by Wessex in 827.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Sussex is divided into two parts: West Sussex and East Sussex. The county is home to the South Downs, a range of chalk hills that extends for about 260 square miles. The highest point in Sussex is Blackdown, at 919 feet.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Sussex is diverse, with a strong focus on tourism, agriculture, and fishing. The county is also known for its vineyards and breweries.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Sussex has a rich cultural heritage, with its own distinct dialect, traditional music, and folklore. The county is also home to several notable landmarks, including the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and the historic town of Rye.
