Terrie Hall
Terrie Linn Hall (July 19, 1960 – September 16, 2013) was an American anti-smoking advocate. She became well-known for her participation in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) "Tips From Former Smokers" campaign, which aimed to educate the public about the dangers of smoking and encourage smokers to quit.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Terrie Hall was born on July 19, 1960, in Mount Clemens, Michigan. She grew up in North Carolina, where she started smoking cigarettes at the age of 13. Hall continued to smoke heavily into her adulthood.
Health Issues[edit | edit source]
In 2000, Hall was diagnosed with oral cancer, which was attributed to her long-term smoking habit. Despite undergoing treatment, the cancer spread to her larynx, leading to a total laryngectomy in 2001. This surgery left her unable to speak without the aid of an electrolarynx, a device that produces sound for speech.
Advocacy Work[edit | edit source]
After her diagnosis and subsequent surgeries, Hall became a vocal advocate against smoking. She began sharing her story publicly to raise awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use. Her efforts gained national attention when she participated in the CDC's "Tips From Former Smokers" campaign, which launched in 2012. In the campaign, Hall appeared in several television commercials and online videos, where she candidly discussed the impact of smoking on her health and life.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Hall's participation in the "Tips From Former Smokers" campaign had a significant impact on public health. The CDC reported that the campaign led to a substantial increase in calls to quitlines and visits to the campaign's website. Hall's story resonated with many smokers and non-smokers alike, highlighting the severe consequences of tobacco use.
Death[edit | edit source]
Terrie Hall passed away on September 16, 2013, at the age of 53, due to complications from cancer. Her legacy continues to influence anti-smoking campaigns and public health initiatives aimed at reducing tobacco use.
