Tirunelveli
A city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu
Tirunelveli (also known as Nellai) is a city in the southern part of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the administrative headquarters of the Tirunelveli district. The city is located on the west bank of the Thamirabarani River and is known for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance.

Tirunelveli has a history that dates back over 2,000 years. It was ruled by various dynasties, including the Pandya dynasty, the Chola dynasty, and the Madurai Nayaks. The name "Tirunelveli" is believed to be derived from the Tamil words "Thiru" (sacred), "nel" (paddy), and "veli" (fence), referring to the abundance of paddy fields in the area.

Tirunelveli is situated at a latitude of 8.73° N and a longitude of 77.7° E. The city covers an area of approximately 189.9 square kilometers. The Thamirabarani River, which flows through the city, is a major source of water for irrigation and drinking purposes. The region is characterized by a tropical climate, with hot summers and moderate rainfall during the monsoon season.
