From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Trichloro(chloromethyl)silane is a chemical compound with the formula Cl3SiCH2Cl. It is a colorless liquid that fumes in air. It is used as a reagent in organic synthesis.

Structure and Bonding[edit | edit source]

Trichloro(chloromethyl)silane is a tetrahedral molecule. The silicon atom is at the center of the tetrahedron, with the three chlorine atoms and the chloromethyl group attached to it. The bond angles are approximately 109.5 degrees, which is typical for tetrahedral molecules.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

Trichloro(chloromethyl)silane can be synthesized by the reaction of chloromethane with silicon tetrachloride in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst such as aluminium chloride.

Reactions[edit | edit source]

Trichloro(chloromethyl)silane reacts with water to form hydrochloric acid and silanol. It can also react with alcohols to form esters.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Trichloro(chloromethyl)silane is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It can be used to introduce a silicon atom into a molecule, which can then be used as a protecting group in further reactions.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Trichloro(chloromethyl)silane is a highly reactive and corrosive substance. It should be handled with care, using appropriate personal protective equipment. It can cause burns and eye damage.
