The Tripura Sundari Temple, also known as Matabari, is a Hindu temple located in the ancient city of Udaipur in the Gomati district of the Indian state of Tripura. The temple is dedicated to Tripura Sundari, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Parvati.

The temple was constructed in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, the then ruler of the Manikya dynasty of Tripura. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, which are significant shrines and pilgrimage destinations in Shaktism, the goddess-focused Hindu tradition.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

The temple is built in the typical Bengali style with a square sanctum housing the idol of the goddess. The idol of Tripura Sundari is made of Kasti stone and is about 5 feet in height. The temple complex also includes a smaller idol of Chhoti Maa, another form of the goddess.

Significance[edit | edit source]

The Tripura Sundari Temple holds immense religious significance and is a major pilgrimage site for devotees of Shaktism. The temple is especially crowded during the festival of Diwali, when a large fair is organized in the temple premises. Devotees believe that worshipping at this temple brings prosperity and fulfillment of wishes.
