TrkB

The TrkB receptor, also known as Tropomyosin receptor kinase B, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NTRK2 gene. TrkB is a receptor for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 and neurotrophin-4/5.

Function[edit | edit source]

TrkB is part of the large family of receptor tyrosine kinases. It has a high affinity for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin-4 (NT-4). TrkB activation by BDNF and NT-4 leads to phosphorylation of the receptor, which triggers a series of intracellular signaling cascades.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Alterations in the function of the TrkB receptor and its ligands have been linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, depression, and cancer. TrkB has been considered as a potential therapeutic target in these conditions.
