U-50488 is a drug which acts as a highly selective kappa-opioid agonist. It has analgesic effects and can cause dysphoria and hallucinations. It was discovered in 1976 by the Upjohn company.

U-50488 is a structurally novel, selective kappa opioid receptor agonist. The chemical name of U-50488 is trans-3,4-dichloro-N-methyl-N-[2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)cyclohexyl]benzeneacetamide.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

U-50488 has been found to act as a highly selective κ-opioid agonist, but without any significant activity at the μ- or δ-opioid receptors. It has been used in scientific research for its analgesic effects and as a tool to better understand the function of kappa opioid receptors.

Effects[edit | edit source]

The effects of U-50488 include analgesia, diuresis, and sedation. It can also cause dysphoria and hallucinations. The dysphoric and hallucinogenic effects are thought to be due to the kappa opioid receptor's role in the regulation of perception and mood.
