The medical school was initially founded in 1896 as the Pacific Sanitarium and School of Osteopathic Medicine. It underwent several name changes:
- In 1903, it became the Pacific College of Osteopathy.
- In 1914, it merged with the Los Angeles College of Osteopathy, culminating in the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons.
- By 1961, it was recognized as the California College of Medicine.
- In 1962, it transitioned its degree offering from DO to MD.
- In 1967, it was acquired by the University of California, Irvine, and formally became the UC Irvine School of Medicine.
