Urinary meatus

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Urinary meatus is the opening or outlet of the urethra, the tube that transports urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. It is also the duct through which semen is ejaculated in males.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The urinary meatus is located at the tip of the penis in males and in front of the vagina in females. It is the final point in the urinary tract and plays a crucial role in the excretion of urine and, in males, the ejaculation of semen.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the urinary meatus is to allow the passage of urine from the body. In males, it also serves as the exit point for semen during ejaculation. The urinary meatus, along with the rest of the urinary tract, plays a vital role in the body's waste management system.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Conditions that can affect the urinary meatus include meatal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the opening, and hypospadias, a birth defect in which the meatus is located on the underside of the penis. Both conditions can cause problems with urination and may require surgical correction.
