Vasanthi Jayaraman
Vasanthi Jayaraman is an Indian-American biophysicist known for her significant contributions to the field of biophysics, particularly in the study of neurotransmitter receptors. She is a professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) and has made notable advancements in understanding the structure and function of glutamate receptors.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Vasanthi Jayaraman was born in India. She completed her undergraduate studies in Physics at the University of Madras. She then pursued her Master's degree in Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Jayaraman earned her Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of California, Berkeley.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing her Ph.D., Jayaraman conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco, where she focused on the study of neurotransmitter receptors. She joined the faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Research[edit | edit source]
Jayaraman's research primarily focuses on the structure and function of glutamate receptors, which are critical for synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. Her work has provided insights into the mechanisms of neurotransmission and has implications for understanding neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Vasanthi Jayaraman has received several awards and honors for her contributions to the field of biophysics, including:
- The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Project Grant Program (R01)
- The American Heart Association (AHA) Scientist Development Grant
- The University of Texas System Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Jayaraman resides in Houston, Texas, where she continues her research and teaching at UTHealth. She is married and has two children.
