Verdello (grape)

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Verdello is a white Italian grape variety that is grown primarily in the Umbria region of central Italy. It is one of the permitted grape varieties in the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wines of Orvieto.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Verdello are not clear, but it is believed to have been growing in the Umbria region for several centuries. The grape is often confused with several other Italian grape varieties that share similar names, such as Verdicchio and Verduzzo, but DNA analysis has shown that they are distinct varieties.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Verdello is a late-ripening grape that requires a long growing season to fully develop its flavors. It is a hardy variety that can withstand the cold winters and hot summers of the Umbria region. The grape has a natural high acidity which helps to maintain freshness and balance in the wines it produces.

Wine regions[edit | edit source]

While Verdello is grown in several regions of Italy, it is most commonly found in the Umbria region, particularly in the DOC wines of Orvieto. Here, it is often blended with other local grape varieties such as Grechetto, Trebbiano, and Malvasia to produce a dry, crisp white wine with flavors of green apple and citrus.

Styles[edit | edit source]

Verdello wines are typically light-bodied with high acidity. They are known for their fresh, crisp character and flavors of green apple, citrus, and almond. While most Verdello wines are meant to be consumed young, some producers in the Orvieto DOC are experimenting with aging the wines on their lees (dead yeast cells) to add complexity and texture.

Food pairing[edit | edit source]

Due to its high acidity and fresh flavors, Verdello is a versatile wine that can be paired with a variety of dishes. It is particularly well-suited to seafood dishes, such as grilled fish or calamari, as well as light pasta dishes and salads.
