Wedding

A wedding is a ceremony where two people are united in marriage. Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes. Most wedding ceremonies involve an exchange of marriage vows by a couple, presentation of a gift (offering, rings, symbolic item, flowers, money), and a public proclamation of marriage by an authority figure or celebrant.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The word "wedding" comes from the Old English weddian, meaning "to pledge". In reference to the ceremony of marrying, it is first recorded as a noun in 1303; prior to that, the verb referred to the mutual pledge of a couple.

Types of Weddings[edit | edit source]

There are many types of weddings, including:

  • Civil wedding: A civil wedding is a ceremony presided over by a local civil authority, such as a mayor or a justice of the peace.
  • Destination wedding: A destination wedding is one in which the engaged couple and invited guests travel to a specific location for a wedding.
  • Elopement: Elopement is the act of getting married, often unexpectedly, without inviting guests to the wedding.

Wedding Traditions[edit | edit source]

Wedding traditions vary greatly between cultures, but some common elements include:

  • Wedding Dresses: The bride's dress is often a major aspect of the wedding ceremony, with many cultures having traditional styles and colors.
  • Wedding Rings: The exchange of wedding rings is a symbolic representation of the couple's commitment to each other.
  • Wedding Receptions: After the wedding ceremony, a reception is often held to celebrate the marriage. This can include a meal, music, and dancing.
  • Wedding Cakes: A wedding cake is often served at the wedding reception.
