Werewolf: The Apocalypse is a tabletop role-playing game set in the World of Darkness universe. It was first published by White Wolf Publishing in 1992. The game is centered around werewolves, known as Garou, who are engaged in a spiritual war to protect the Earth, known as Gaia, from the forces of corruption and destruction.

Setting[edit | edit source]

The game is set in a world much like our own, but with a hidden supernatural reality. The Garou are shapeshifters who can transform into wolves, humans, or a hybrid form. They are divided into various tribes, each with its own culture, history, and role in the war against the Wyrm, a cosmic force of entropy and decay.

Tribes[edit | edit source]

The Garou are divided into several tribes, each with unique characteristics and philosophies. Some of the notable tribes include:

  • Black Furies - A tribe of female warriors dedicated to the protection of women and the Earth.
  • Bone Gnawers - Often seen as the lowest of the tribes, they live among the homeless and downtrodden.
  • Children of Gaia - A tribe focused on peace and healing.
  • Fianna - A tribe with strong ties to Celtic mythology and culture.
  • Get of Fenris - Fierce warriors with a Norse heritage.
  • Glass Walkers - Urban werewolves who embrace technology.
  • Red Talons - A tribe that consists entirely of lupus (wolf-born) Garou.
  • Shadow Lords - Manipulative and power-hungry, they often vie for leadership.
  • Silent Striders - Wanderers and messengers with ties to ancient Egypt.
  • Silver Fangs - The traditional leaders of the Garou Nation, claiming noble lineage.
  • Uktena - Mystics and keepers of ancient secrets.
  • Wendigo - Native American werewolves who seek to protect their lands and people.

Forms[edit | edit source]

Garou can shift between five forms:

  • Homid - Human form.
  • Glabro - Near-human form, slightly larger and more muscular.
  • Crinos - The iconic werewolf form, a hybrid of human and wolf.
  • Hispo - A dire wolf form, larger and more powerful than a natural wolf.
  • Lupus - Wolf form.

The Triat[edit | edit source]

The cosmology of Werewolf: The Apocalypse revolves around three primal forces known as the Triat:

  • Wyld - The force of creation and chaos.
  • Weaver - The force of order and structure.
  • Wyrm - Originally a force of balance, now corrupted into a force of destruction and decay.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Players create characters who are Garou, choosing their tribe, auspice (role determined by the moon phase under which they were born), and breed (whether they were born as humans, wolves, or from Garou parents). The game uses a Storyteller System, which emphasizes narrative and character development over complex rules.
