William Michael Lynn is a notable figure in the field of defense and technology. He served as the United States Deputy Secretary of Defense from 2009 to 2011, under the Obama Administration. Prior to this, he held the position of Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) from 1997 to 2001.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
William Michael Lynn was born in 1954. He completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science. He later earned a Juris Doctor degree from Cornell Law School and a Master's degree in Public Affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.

Department of Defense[edit | edit source]
Lynn's career in the Department of Defense began in the 1980s. He served as the Director of Program Analysis and Evaluation in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and as the Executive Director of the Defense Business Board.
In 1997, Lynn was appointed as the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) by President Bill Clinton. He served in this role until 2001. During his tenure, he was responsible for the Department of Defense's annual budget and financial management.
In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Lynn as the United States Deputy Secretary of Defense. In this role, he was the chief operating officer of the Department of Defense, responsible for the day-to-day business of the Pentagon.
Post-Department of Defense Career[edit | edit source]
After leaving the Department of Defense in 2011, Lynn joined Dell Technologies as the CEO of Dell Federal Government Services. He also served as the CEO of Finmeccanica North America and DRS Technologies, two leading defense technology companies.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Lynn is married and has two children. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Security Advisory Council.
