William Oliver Baker (July 15, 1915 – October 31, 2005) was an American chemist and former president of Bell Labs. He was known for his contributions to polymer chemistry and his role in advancing telecommunications technology.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
William O. Baker was born in Chestertown, Maryland. He attended Washington College where he earned his B.S. in 1935. He then went on to Princeton University, where he completed his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1938.
Career[edit | edit source]
Baker joined Bell Labs in 1939, where he initially worked on the development of synthetic rubber during World War II. His work in polymer chemistry led to significant advancements in the field, including the development of new materials and processes.
In 1973, Baker became the president of Bell Labs, a position he held until 1979. During his tenure, he oversaw numerous innovations in telecommunications, including advancements in semiconductor technology and the development of fiber optics.

Throughout his career, Baker received numerous awards and honors, including the National Medal of Science in 1988, the Perkin Medal in 1981, and the Priestley Medal in 1991. He was also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
