Yaakov Litzman (born 2 September 1948) is an Israeli politician and member of the Knesset for the United Torah Judaism party. He has served in various ministerial roles, including as the Minister of Health and the Minister of Housing and Construction.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Yaakov Litzman was born in Germansville, Pennsylvania, in the United States. He immigrated to Israel with his family at a young age. Litzman was educated in yeshivas and became a prominent figure in the Hasidic community.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Litzman began his political career as an aide to Rabbi Menachem Porush, a long-time member of the Knesset. He was first elected to the Knesset in 1999 as a member of the United Torah Judaism party, a coalition of Agudat Yisrael and Degel HaTorah.

Minister of Health[edit | edit source]

Litzman served as the Minister of Health from 29 December 2015 to 13 September 2017. During his tenure, he focused on improving the healthcare system in Israel, including efforts to reduce waiting times and improve hospital infrastructure. He resigned in 2017 in protest against the Shabbat railway maintenance work.

Deputy Minister of Health[edit | edit source]

After his resignation, Litzman was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Health, a position he held from 13 September 2017 to 6 September 2019. In this role, he continued to influence health policy and advocate for the needs of the Haredi community.

Minister of Housing and Construction[edit | edit source]

In May 2020, Litzman was appointed as the Minister of Housing and Construction in the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. He served in this role until June 2021, focusing on housing solutions for the growing population and addressing the housing crisis in Israel.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Litzman has been involved in several controversies during his political career. These include allegations of protecting a former principal accused of sexual abuse and his stance on public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Litzman is married and has children. He is a devout member of the Gur Hasidic dynasty and resides in Jerusalem.
