Zelda May Rubinstein (May 28, 1933 – January 27, 2010) was an American actress and human rights activist. She is best known for her role as Tangina Barrons in the Poltergeist film series. Rubinstein was also known for her advocacy work in the fight against HIV/AIDS and her support for LGBT rights.
Early life[edit | edit source]
Rubinstein was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to a Jewish family. She was the youngest of three children. Rubinstein attended the University of Pittsburgh and later studied at the University of California, Berkeley.
Career[edit | edit source]
Rubinstein began her acting career relatively late, making her film debut in 1980. She gained widespread recognition for her role as the medium Tangina Barrons in the 1982 horror film Poltergeist. She reprised her role in the sequels Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) and Poltergeist III (1988).
In addition to her work in the Poltergeist series, Rubinstein appeared in numerous other films and television shows, including Sixteen Candles (1984), Teen Witch (1989), and Southland Tales (2006). She also had guest roles on television series such as Picket Fences, The Pretender, and ER.

Rubinstein was a passionate advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and LGBT rights. She was one of the first celebrities to participate in the AIDS Project Los Angeles's AIDS Walk and was actively involved in various campaigns to promote awareness and education about the disease.

Rubinstein was known for her distinctive voice and petite stature, standing at 4 feet 3 inches (1.30 m) tall. She never married and had no children. Rubinstein passed away on January 27, 2010, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 76.
