Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Medvedev was born in Tbilisi, Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He studied at the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in Moscow, where he specialized in biology and genetics.
Career[edit | edit source]
Medvedev worked at the Institute of Medical Radiology in Obninsk, where he conducted research in genetics. He became widely known for his outspoken criticism of Lysenkoism, a politically driven campaign against genetics and science in the Soviet Union led by Trofim Lysenko. Medvedev's opposition to Lysenkoism and his advocacy for scientific integrity made him a prominent figure in the Soviet dissident movement.
Human Rights Activism[edit | edit source]
In addition to his scientific work, Medvedev was an active human rights activist. He wrote extensively on the suppression of scientific research and the persecution of scientists in the Soviet Union. His writings contributed to the international awareness of the plight of Soviet dissidents and the broader issues of human rights in the Soviet Union.
Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]
Medvedev emigrated to the United Kingdom in the 1970s, where he continued his work as a scientist and writer. He passed away on November 15, 2018, in London.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Medvedev's contributions to genetics and his courageous stand against Lysenkoism have left a lasting impact on the scientific community. His efforts in human rights activism have also been recognized as significant in the fight for freedom and integrity in scientific research.
