The roots of the Wayne State University School of Medicine trace back to 1868 with the establishment of the Detroit Medical College. Over the years, the school underwent several mergers and name changes. In 1885, it merged with Michigan College of Medicine to form the Detroit College of Medicine. By 1913, it had evolved into the Detroit College of Medicine and Surgery. In 1934, its association with Wayne University led to its renaming as Wayne University School of Medicine. Reflecting the growth and reputation of the institution, it was finally designated as Wayne State School of Medicine in 1956.
