1-Nonadecanol

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

1-Nonadecanol, also known as nonadecyl alcohol, is a long-chain fatty alcohol with the chemical formula C₁₉H₄₀O. It is a solid, waxy substance at room temperature and is part of the class of compounds known as fatty alcohols.

Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]

1-Nonadecanol is a straight-chain alcohol with a 19-carbon backbone. Its molecular structure can be represented as CH₃(CH₂)₁₈OH. The presence of the hydroxyl group (-OH) at the terminal end of the carbon chain classifies it as a primary alcohol.

Physical Properties[edit | edit source]

  • Molecular Weight: 284.52 g/mol
  • Melting Point: Approximately 59-61 °C
  • Boiling Point: Approximately 344 °C
  • Appearance: White, waxy solid
  • Solubility: Insoluble in water, soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether

Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]

1-Nonadecanol is relatively stable under normal conditions but can undergo typical alcohol reactions such as oxidation to form nonadecanoic acid or esterification to form esters.

Occurrence and Production[edit | edit source]

1-Nonadecanol is not commonly found in nature in significant quantities. It can be synthesized through the reduction of nonadecanoic acid or its esters. Industrial production often involves the hydrogenation of fatty acid methyl esters derived from natural oils and fats.

Applications[edit | edit source]

1-Nonadecanol is used in various applications due to its emollient and surfactant properties. It is commonly used in the production of:

Safety and Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]

1-Nonadecanol is considered to be of low toxicity. It is generally regarded as safe for use in cosmetics and personal care products. However, as with all chemical substances, appropriate handling and disposal measures should be followed to minimize environmental impact.
